BENGALURU, India - A special Indian court sentenced notorious human-trafficking suspect Rifadul Islam, aka Ridoy Babo, and six other Bangladeshi men to life in prison for sexually assaulting a fellow countrywoman.
The court sentenced another Bangladeshi woman to 20 years in prison and another Bangladeshi man to five years in the same case on Friday. Two other women accomplices were sentenced to nine months in jail.
According to the prosecution, the 22-year-old victim, who was later identified as Bangladeshi, was subjected to horrific sexual assaults by the 12 perpetrators.
The Bengaluru police charged 11 Bangladeshi nationals who had entered India illegally with running a trafficking ring in the charge sheet. According to the police, the suspects lured young Bangladeshi women into prostitution under the guise of employment.
According to the charge sheet, the victim was gang-raped by the perpetrators for refusing to work as a prostitute.
